Melville Ponds Campground is located on the northwest side of Aquidneck island, in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
The main portion of the park is essentially a circle with RV back-in sites along the inside and outside of the circle. It is bisected through the middle with a road not open to thru-traffic (bathrooms are located here). The tent site areas are located off the main circle in three areas, and there is a pull-through area up by the main office/entrance. I believe the sites across the road (on the pond) are seasonal only(?)
This weekend we stayed in site #100, which is on the corner of road to the bathrooms, on the left side of the circle. Getting into the site with a 40 ft travel trailer took a couple of tries and the use of the site across from us (empty at the time). Likewise pulling out to leave required some maneuvering too.
Note:
Google maps tried to route us down Bradford road which works, but is much bumpier than Sullivan Road (at the light, across from Dunkin Donuts).
There are apparently some walking/hiking trails right there but we never checked them out (went to Glen Park and Sakonnet Parkway instead.
Due to Covid, we really didn’t have much interaction with the owners but the couple of times we did they seemed pleasant and very reasonable / accommodating. The sites seemed to vary quite a bit in size, trees, etc but overall seemed very nice. Our site in particular was both quite wide and plenty deep for our 40 foot trailer, plus the 8 foot deck in the back, and the tow vehicle too.
The playground seemed to have a good amount of play equipment, especially since that stuff is so crazy expensive! The picnic table was in good shape and it was a good fire ring too. Unique (I think) to our site was the hill (can be seen in the picture). Not shown is the open green space that the steps lead down to. This seemed like a nice place for the kids to gather and run around.
